Clara, business woman, living a man’s life and Agatha sharing her life. The shadow of Agatha Dawson and Clara Whitaker shades the whole story, especially when the redoubtable Miss Climpson introduced in this book for the first time arrives in their hometown to investigate.
Both very devoted to each other. Nice to be so irresistible.
The West Indian relative is the only person of color I can remember in the novels written by Sayers and he is highly sympathetic for a number of reasons. The case prime premise is essentially core to being a standard central original. After all, Paterson hadn’t a spark of real evidence. Clara leaving all her belongings to Agatha, spoiling her brother.
Before her death Miss Dawson had made him an allowance, and expected that her heir would continue it, but Miss Whittaker had stopped it. I still do not like his accent though. And yet a woman who, despite her clear intentions of making said great-niece her heir, had a phobic fear of wills, and refused to make one, no matter what new laws might be in the offing.
The plot dogothy Unnatural Death seems to arise from a question: The World According to Anna.
With my 21st century outlook I was uncomfortable with the very limited but unflinching expression of racial prejudice; it dorohty undoubtedly accurate for its time, but it comes as a shock to me every time I encounter it in older books. He insisted on autopsy, could not find anything and was forced to leave unnatural practice in a small town because of his resulting reputation as a troublemaker who cannot let the dead rest in peace.
Praise for Unnatural Death: Why did you have to be a “product dororhy her time” in that particular way? Does anybody know the exact date of publication of this edition? Though never quick-witted, Agatha Dawson had an iron constitution and a will to fight that never abated in her old age.
My husband, who is a nurse and was once a phlebotomist—a person who draws bloodsays air embolisms ARE a danger and COULD be fatal under certain unlikely circumstances. Evelyn Gotobed tells Wimsey unnatral an episode shortly before the sisters were dismissed in which Miss Whittaker had tried to get them to witness Miss Dawson’s will, without the latter’s knowledge.
I’m still rationing my reading of Sayers’ Lord Peter series but it’s hard. I really enjoyed this story a lot.
A doctor–you can’t have any idea how dependent he is on the fancies and prejudices of his patients. So when she becomes the confidante of Vera Findlater, she is worried by the “schoolgirl crush” Miss Findlater has for Miss Whittaker — an unhealthy passion, which makes Miss Findlater susceptible to being abused by Miss Whittaker Mysterious circumstances pile up and at the end two witnesses are murdered, at least three more people have come near murder, and the murderer herself commits suicide.
What’s problematic is that her lesbianness is a major part of what makes her suspicious. Where no one knows his neighbour. This answer contains spoilers. This is a book of its era-the earliest quarter of the 20th century.
I don’t think I’ll listen to another, at least no time soon. When Lord Peter Wimsey, the dashing gentleman detective, looks into the matter, he finds that death stalks all those who might testify.
Written inthis is the third book in the Lord Peter Wimsey series and has recently been reissued by New English Library. Taylor, Pritchard would probably have been frightened off and left his wife alone. More books by Dorothy L Sayers.
Although their styles are so different, I can absolutely understand how Christie became the standard. Purely as a mystery, I think it’s excellent — excellent and very grim, the grimmer the more I think about it.
Wimsey is sometimes cocky and so full of himself I found myself rolling my eyes a time or two — but in th Lord Peter Wimsey, a year-old self-taught private sleuth, is at it again with his friend and crime-solving partner Charles Parker of Scotland Yard. Miss Dawson had an extreme aversion to making a will, believing that Miss Whittaker, her only known relative, would naturally inherit everything.
It was very well read. The Attenbury Emeralds Dorothy L. This is a very dangerous attitude for anybody to take, and results in disaster. My copy seems to have literally been chewed at some point.
Lord Peter’s personality grows in leaps drothy bounds in this, the third of the Lord Peter Wimsey series. Then we have the “couples”: What is going on in the mysterious Mrs Forrest’s Mayfair flat? Published July 11th by HarperTorch first published Agatha is colder, trickier and more devious in the tellings, but I do think that Sayers is far more inventive, actually.

I found Sayers way of handling this both clever and interesting. I hope this will be the only weak story in the series. The Complete Short Stories. I don’t really want Sayers to have left out the Rev. A woman who, when her longtime housemate and, though it’s never directly stated, almost certainly her lover died, remained in the same house, and took in their common great-niece.
So why not provide the young lass with a deahh alternative?
Whittaker is arrested, and commits suicide in prison.
